McAuliffe kicks off his campaign

Terry McAuliffeTerry McAuliffe has been to Hampton Roads at least twice, and both times I’ve been unable to be there. I’ve noticed that I haven’t been posting about his campaign. Those who’ve been reading know that while I’m definitely a fan of McAuliffe and what he’s done for the national party, I’m not exactly thrilled with his run for the executive mansion here in Virginia. Still, his campaign is real, and needs to be covered.

Dan Sullivan over at VBDems has a great post on McAuliffe’s campaign kick-off at Norfolk’s Nauticus. I highly recommend heading over and checking out how that event went and what McAuliffe had to say.

Progressives should be excited about McAuliffe’s campaign and what a McAuliffe administration might be able to do. It would be great if he could be elected, but I have my doubts that he can carry enough of the commonwealth in the general election. Both Creigh Deeds and Brian Moran have established themselves as moderate Democrats who’ll be able to raise the support and votes needed to win. McAuliffe might be too far to the left to convince moderate conservatives that he’s their candidate, and their are a lot of them throughout Virginia. Kenton Ngo at the New Dominion Project has an interesting post of exactly who McAuliffe is targeting to overcome his disconnect with moderate Virginia voters. It seems like McAuliffe is attempting to win based on national strategy than on what’s worked in Virginia previously.

Still a very interesting primary.
