Moran and Wagner lead in latest polling
By Joel McDonald • Mar 31st, 2009 • Category: Blog, Campaigns & ElectionsBrian Moran, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Virginia, and Jody Wagner, candidate for the nomination for Lt. Governor, are leading in the latest Public Policy Polling release.
Candidates for Governor:
Brian Moran: 22%
Terry McAuliffe: 18%
Creigh Deeds: 15%
Undecided: 45%
Candidates for Lt. Governor:
Jody Wagner: 21%
Pat Edmonson: 4%
Mike Signer: 4%
Jon Bowerbank: 4%
Undecided: 67%
Brian Moran leads Terry McAuliffe by only 0.4 points above the margin of error, while Jody Wagner leads all of her opponents by 13.4 points above the margin. McAuliffe led Moran by 2% in the last PPP report, within the 3.9% margin of error. Deeds was at 14% in that poll, trailing outside the margin.
The most dramatic shift is in the race for the Lt. Governor nomination. Earlier this month, PPP reported 73% were undecided in that race. That number decreased by 6 points. All gains have gone to Wagner, leaving her opponents all at 4%. Edmonson, who trailed Wagner by 3% in the last poll, lost 2% and now trails by 17%.
The race for the nomination is far from over. I expect Moran and McAuliffe to gain a few points, the lead swing between the candidates, and Deeds to continue to trail. The number of undecideds will likely continue to drop in the race for Lt. Governor, and where those gains fall will be telling. Wagner’s large margin is going to be difficult to close.
