100 days of President Obama
By Joel McDonald • Apr 29th, 2009 • Category: Blog, Related News & EventsIt’s been 100 days since President Barack Obama took office. Along with just about every other news outlet and blog, I’m going to rate his performance over the last 100 days.
I’ve found PolitiFact’s Obameter to be a great tool for a quick glance at the progress Obama has made in regard to the promises he made on the campaign trail. The site keeps score on Obama as he progresses through his presidency, clearly showing the promises he’s kept, what he’s broken, and keeps tab on what’s ongoing. I’ll be checking this site throughout his time in office, and I hope you will too.
Of the 514 promises being tracked by PolitiFact, 80% haven’t seen any action, and 13% are either stalled or in the works. Specific action has only been seen for about 8% of the his promises made that are being tracked. Since Obama has only completed 3% of his terms in office (yes, I’m counting on two, folks), I’d say he’s moving along at a decent clip.
Of the 8% of his promises that have seen some action, 68% have clearly been kept. Another 18% have seen some sort of compromise, leaving 15% of promises broken.
Here’s the list of promises broken thus far:
- End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000
- Allow five days of public comment before signing bills
- Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials
- Create a $3,000 tax credit for companies that add jobs
- Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009
- Recognize the Armenian genocide
This would also be a good time to look at how Obama is polling these days compared to when he took office back in January. Here’s the Poll Average from Real Clear Politics.

The RCP has Obama’s average spread at +31.7. The New York Times/CBS poll has Obama’s job approval rating at 68%, 11 points higher than former President Bush at the end of his 100 days in office.
The last 100 days have seen advances in equality in the work place, work toward the stabilization of the economy, expansion of scientific opportunity, the reworking of strategies in Afghanistan and Iraq, and much more. This is a president who moves from one issue to another, balancing a very heavy load each day in office. There are still massive expectations and many uncertainties concerning the outcomes of his decisions and programs implemented, but still a wealth of hope from the nation supporting his presidency and goals.
