National, State, and Local Politics Affecting Virginia Beach

DPVA Grassroots Training on Sat, May 23rd.

From Don Mark, Political Director of the Democratic Party of Virginia

I am extremely excited to let you know about the upcoming grassroots training in your region that the DPVA is sponsoring. We have made tremendous gains in the past few years and we need to work as hard as we ever have before to win in 2009. Republicans want to turn back the clock not only in the legislature but also in the gains Virginia Democrats have made since 2001. We need to make sure we hit the ground running after the June primary, ready to put another Democrat in the Executive Mansion and win back the House of Delegates. Last year, we were better organized than the Republicans and it paid off on Election Day.

That will be the key to winning in ’09 as well. Last year, according to exit polls, 50% of Virginians were personally contacted by the Obama campaign, compared to 38% who were contacted by the McCain campaign. Among the voters contacted by Democratic volunteers, Obama won 59%-40%.

We need to build on this grassroots movement. In that spirit, I want to invite you and other dedicated Democrats to our regional grassroots training in Newport News on May 23. We’ll be discussing issues such as campaign-committee integration, effective communication methods, raising money for your committee or group, and other useful organizing tools. Registration will begin at 12:15PM and trainings will be going on all day.
