Washington Post: Endorsement of Creigh Deeds comes down to transportation, again

Creigh DeedsMany cite the Washington Post’s endorsement of Creigh Deeds in the Democratic primary to have been significant to his win. Now that the newspaper is endorsing him in the general election, many are looking to see if it will give the campaign the boost that could make winning the November 3rd election a possibility for the Democratic candidate for Governor of Virginia.

Transportation is the central issue cited by the Washington Post that sets Creigh Deeds apart from Republican rival Bob McDonnell. On this issue, the paper states that Deeds is, “preferable to Mr. McDonnell’s silver-tongued embrace of ideas that would mire Virginia in a traffic-clogged, backward-looking past.”

Some conservatives incredulous about this endorsement, crying that the editorial board is not conservative. While I don’t doubt that the paper swings to the left,  what I do know is that it seems that everyone looking at the reality of transportation knows that we can afford to do anything without raising some sort of capital. No one “likes” taxes for the sake of taxes, but taxes are used to pay for public services and projects, and transportation is a doozy. We’re at the point of abandoning roads and bridges throughout the commonwealth for lack of funds. There hasn’t been any boost in funding for transportation in Virginia since 1986. I think McDonnell is totally off base when he rules out any increase in funding without an increase in taxes. That’s not the reality in which we exist, and won’t get us anywhere far on transportation, and likely would harm other public services. I’ve heard this from business leaders, state authorities, regional authorities, and it’s being echoed by the Washington Post.

Transportation is just the top of the list of issues where Creigh Deeds should be Virginia’s choice for our next governor. Over and over again, Bob McDonnell has opposed measures to strengthen the economy for Virginia and support Virginia workers. Over and over again, Bob McDonnell has fought to push his theocratic conservative social agenda onto the people of Virginia without any regard to individual liberty. With this election, Virginia can either continue in a positive direction with Creigh Deeds or eradicate a decade of progress with the election of Bob McDonnell.

Creigh Deeds has my full endorsement, and I ask that you vote for him on November 3rd.
