Rep. Glenn Nye to Participate in a Community Discussion

This Saturday, November 21st, at 10:30 AM, what’s being labeled as a “Community Discussion” will take place at Enoch Baptist Church at 5641 Herbert Moore Rd, Virginia Beach, VA.
If you’re planning to attend, please be on time. Index cards will be provided at entry (10:30) and you will have until 10:50 to have cards turned in so that they can be read by the moderator. Congressman Nye will begin promptly at 11:00 after the Welcome, Purpose, Forum guidelines, and Introduction. He will make brief remarks and then respond to questions until 12:00.
While one would think that Nye would have reached out to his constituents in an open and public way during the last recess when other senators and representatives were zipping around their states and districts hosting town hall meetings, this sadly was not the case. Instead, Nye chose not face the people of the 2nd district en masse. This prompted many to ask what the freshman congressman was either A.) hiding or B.) afraid of.
To be fair, Nye did attempt present his activities while in office to the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee, but when Nye and VBDC leadership learned of the intentions of local tea baggers to storm the meeting, the presentation was cancelled. Many called for Nye to step up and host the presentation and discussion at a larger venue. While this seems to be exactly what Nye is doing, I don’t think people thought it would take the congressman three months to arrange it.
Some are wondering why Nye has decided that now is a good time to participate in this discussion now. Could it be that he wants an opportunity to explain why he voted against the House health care reform bill, notoriously holds his ground as a blue dog, or make a case to Democrats and independents that he has been better than Republican Thelma Drake, who he defeated last year. I personally wonder if the 2009 election was a bit of a wake-up call for Nye who faces reelection in 2010.
