National, State, and Local Politics Affecting Virginia Beach

Yes, This is an Election Year

Voting…but then again, isn’t EVERY year an election year in Virginia?

Looking at my friends, I seem to have a good balance in life. On one side I have those who are deeply involved in the political infrastructure at every level, and on the other I have those who are sometimes surprised when election day is here and I ask if they’ve voted. Of course, there are those in the middle who on occasion will chat about candidates and policy, and then there are those on the extremes who either eat/sleep/dream politics or absolutely refuse to talk about politics altogether. This combination seems to keep me grounded and connected at times where it’s far too easy to become so absorbed in the political process that I miss out on actually living life. To all of these people, I thank you.

All that being said, this IS an election year. Not only is it an election year, it’s a midterm election. This is a big deal nationally, and while I’ll be focusing on our own congressional seat, Glenn Nye in the 2nd District, I may have some tangential moments where I’ll delve into something interesting about candidates throughout the nation.

Just as important are Virginia Beach City Council elections this year. Six of the eleven seats on the council are up for election this year, and here they are:

Seat Incumbent
Bayside Louis Jones
Lynnhaven James Wood
Beach John Uhrin
Princess Anne Barbara Henley
At-Large Bill DeSteph
At-Large Rita Sweet Bellitto

I’m not expecting any major upsets for any incumbents, but I honestly am just turning my attention to these races and will have more information on each incumbent and certain to likely challengers in the coming weeks. The filing deadline for candidates is June 8th, so we’ll know exactly who’s running and what seats are in play at that point.

I’m really going to try to make every effort to cover both our congressional and city council races. Many have mentioned how Virginia Beach Progressives has dried up a bit in the last year, but I hope you’ll follow me as I follow the candidates and issues involved in the upcoming election on November 2nd.
