My Letter to Senator Webb Regarding “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Jim WebbDear Senator Webb,

As you may know, this Thursday, May 27, Senator Joe Lieberman and Chairman Carl Levin will offer an amendment to the Senate version of the Defense Authorization bill that would repeal DADT.  This amendment would streamline the repeal of DADT according to the recommendations that will be made following the DOD study on the issue. The amendment says that the president, defense secretary and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff must certify that the new policy is consistent with standards of military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, military recruiting and retention.

Senator, I’m asking that you have faith in the men and women of our armed forces. I have every confidence that they are more than capable of adjusting to the reality that gay men and women do serve honorably and bravely with their straight counterparts in defending our nation and our national interests. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, your vote is crucial. Please vote for the inclusion of the DADT amendment in the Senate version of the Defense Authorization.

Thank You,
